Abortion
An abortion is a medical procedure that is carried out to end a pregnancy. An abortion is sometimes called a “termination of pregnancy”.
There are several types of abortion treatments. The treatment used depends upon the length of the pregnancy and your medical history. These methods are:
• Early medical (abortion pill)
• Surgical (with local anaesthetic)
• Surgical (with general anaesthetic)
The Abortion Pill treatment can be prescribed from approximately 5 weeks gestation and is available up to 9 weeks gestation.
Surgical Abortion performed under a local anaesthetic can be carried out from approximately 5 weeks gestation until 10 weeks gestation.
Surgical Abortions under a general anaesthetic are performed from approximately 5 weeks gestation up to 24 weeks gestation.
