Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. This is also called impotence. It is a common condition, particularly in older men. Recent studies have shown that 22% of 40 year old men and up to 49% of 70 year old men may have or have experienced erectile dysfunction.
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by either physical or psychological problems.
Physical causes account for around 70% of cases. They are:
• Narrowing of the blood vessels to the penis, due to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney disease or diabetes
• Obesity
• Hormone problems
Psychological causes (around 20%) are:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Stress
• Guilt
• Problems with a relationship
• Fear of sexual failure or pregnancy
Because erectile dysfunction is often an early sign that blood vessels are narrowing it is important that you go to your GP and have a check up. Your GP will advise you if there is any risk of cardiovascular disease.
Treatment
• Medication such as Viagra
• Vacuum pumps (to encourage blood flow to the penis)
In addition, there are a variety of steps that men can take to reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction, including leading a healthier lifestyle such as:
• Losing weight
• Stopping smoking
• Moderate alcohol consumption
• Taking regular exercise
• Avoiding street drugs
• Go to counselling to deal with stress/anxiety
