Contraception
Contraception should be the joint responsibility of both sexual partners, whether in a monogamous relationship or during a one night stand.
There are 15 different types of contraception, ranging from barrier methods such as condoms; hormonal methods such as the pill; long term methods such as an implant and permanent methods such as vasectomy. Although men currently only have three physical choices (condoms, vasectomy or abstinence), it is possible to be and remain part of the decision-making process with your partner.
Preventing an unwanted pregnancy should not be your only motivation for choosing to use contraception. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to rise, particularly in young people under the age of 25 years.
Evidence shows that young women are more at risk of catching an STI, as they can lack the confidence and communication skills to negotiate safe sex. Although most men will wear a condom, they won’t bother, unless their partner asks them to.
