A study by The World Health Organisation identifies the numbers of dangerous “back street abortions” are on the increase in countries where abortion is restricted or illegal; these dangerous abortions are also increasing in developing countries. The study, presented in the Lancet, illustrated that the proportion of abortions completed by a person without trained clinical knowledge rose from 44% in 1995 to 49% in 2008.
Professor Beverly Winikoff, from Gynuity, a New York organisation which works to improve access to safer abortion, wrote in the Lancet: "Unsafe abortion is one of the five major contributors to maternal mortality, causing one in every seven or eight maternal deaths in 2008.”

She goes on to say “The data continues to confirm what we have known for decades - that women who wish to terminate unwanted pregnancies will seek abortion at any cost, even if it is illegal or involves risk to their own lives.”

Sexual health services are missing opportunities to discuss alcohol abuse with young people.
A recent report from the British Association for Sexual Health & HIV (BASHH) in conjunction with the Royal College of Phsicians identifies that sexual health services should be playing a significant role in tackling binge drinking and alcohol abuse in young people, a culture that is widespread across the UK.
The report illustrates that more than one million young people attend sexual health clinics each year and that this provides a unique opportunity to communicate key messages relating to alcohol consumption to those who are at risk.
There is clear evidence linking alcohol consumption to poor sexual health, particularly in the young:
-
82% of 16-30 year olds report drinking alcohol before sexual activity
-
People who drink heavily are more likely to have unprotected sex with multiple partners
-
20% of white 14-15-year-old girls report going ‘further than intended' sexually when drunk.
