Every year, over 180,000 women in England and Wales have an abortion. At least one third of British women will have had an abortion by the time they are 45.
There are different kinds of abortion available; the method will depend on how long after conception it takes place.
- Early medical - available up to 9 weeks
- Surgical (with local anaesthetic) - available up to 12 weeks
- Surgical (by general anaesthetic) - from 8 to 20 weeks
- Abortion with sterilisation - available up to 14 weeks
No-one needs to know about your abortion. Your GP, partner or parents do not have to be informed, even if you are under 16 (however, you should consider talking to your parents).
In the UK, abortions can only be carried out in a hospital or licensed clinic. Most abortions that are done at the Calthorpe Clinic are NHS-funded but availability for NHS funding varies from region to region. Your GP or family planning clinic will be able to advise you on the policy in your region. You may prefer to come privately; if so, you do not have to be referred to the Clinic by a doctor.
You can access our services direct, via Family Planning Clinic, Brook Advisory Service, your own GP or one of our own Pregnancy Advisory Services.
